Sacramento established its importance as a center of commerce during the Gold Rush and the founding of The State of California and continues as a center of employment. Sacramento and the surrounding communities of Folsom, Roseville and Rocklin host a variety of large employers. Leading health care companies such as UC Davis Health System, Sutter Health, Dignity Health and Kaiser Permanente are well established in Sacramento. Intel, Hewlett Packard and Oracle are large employers in the technology industry. A variety of banks, mortgage lenders and insurance companies have offices in the area.
